The deployment of fire safety guards and fire marshals is regulated by law for workplaces in the German Workplace Ordinance (ArbStättV) and for events in the German Venue Ordinance (VStättVO). In addition, their deployment makes sense in order to protect material assets and people whenever fire-hazardous work is being carried out and there is a risk of fire. This applies in particular:
Welding, cutting or grinding work generates sparks and high temperatures that can ignite surrounding materials. A fire guard continuously monitors the work area and intervenes immediately in the event of flying sparks or smoke.
Highly flammable and explosive liquids and materials
Special care is required when handling highly flammable or explosive substances. Fire marshals monitor compliance with safety measures and minimise the risk of fire from ignition sources.
Fire watch at events
At events with pyrotechnics or fog systems, the fire alarm system often has to be taken out of operation. During this time, a fire watch ensures fire protection and recognises dangers at an early stage.
Preventive fire protection for outdated or defective safety technology
If the existing fire protection technology is not functional or technically outdated, a fire watch takes over manual monitoring. This reduces the risk of fire until the safety systems are restored.
Fire watch for embers after major fire
After a major fire, hidden pockets of embers can reignite fires. Fire safety guards monitor affected areas over a longer period of time to reliably prevent the fire from flaring up again.

Our strengths for your risk prevention

For effective fire prevention, all highly flammable sources of danger and flammable work are first identified as part of a risk analysis. This includes all work with a particularly high risk of fire or explosion, such as welding, flexing and cutting, as well as maintenance and repair work involving a fire hazard and work with gas or on gas pipes.
The tasks of the fire stations in detail:
We provide you with trained fire marshals who keep an eye on occupational safety and potential sources of danger and who intervene immediately in an emergency and carry out initial measures.
We provide qualified fire guards for your factory premises, for events and for special facilities such as refugee accommodation. They serve to supplement existing fire protection measures or to provide security in the event of a failure or defect in fire protection systems. After a major fire, we take over the protection of the fire site and reliably monitor it for any remaining embers to prevent it from flaring up again.

The tasks of the fire watch and fire guard are similar, but not identical.
- Fire marshals are specially trained persons who monitor the work area during hot work such as welding or flexing in order to prevent fires.
- The fire watch (fire safety watch), on the other hand, secures events or workplaces in order to be able to intervene immediately in the event of a fire.
Both minimise the risk of fire and are ready to act effectively in an emergency to fight fires and minimise damage.
Our fire wardens and fire marshals have in-depth, practice-orientated training in preventive and defensive fire protection. This includes
- Recognised fire safety assistant training
- Evacuation and evacuation training
- Depending on the application profile: completed fire service training
- Training in first aid and evacuation measures
- Knowledge of the operation of fire extinguishers and fire alarm systems
- Qualification in accordance with DGUV regulations for use in welding and other hot work
In addition, our emergency personnel are SCC-certified and regularly trained in accordance with DIN 14096 (fire safety regulations).
A fire watch is used preventively to stop a fire from breaking out or flaring up again.
- Monitoring after a fire to prevent it from flaring up again due to undetected embers.
- Ensuring fire protection at events, e.g. if the fire alarm system is switched off due to the use of pyrotechnics or a fog system.
- Protection of outdated or defective fire protection technology until permanent repair, e.g. if the fire alarm system fails.
In an emergency, we at Paffen Sicherheitsdienst are extremely fast: we can provide you with a reliable fire watch within two hours.
When planning the deployment of fire stations and fire guards, various questions are important in order to properly understand the safety requirements and needs. This concerns e.g:
- Type of event or work
- Scope & Duration
- Location & surroundings
- Risk analysis of potential fire hazards
- Required number & qualification of the firefighters
- Communication & Coordination
- Use of fire-fighting equipment
- Evacuation plans and emergency procedures
With the answers to these questions, our experts create a customised fire protection concept for your requirements.
Yes, in certain cases the deployment of fire guards is mandatory by law. This applies in particular to
- Large events with high visitor numbers
- Escape and rescue routes that must be monitored and kept clear due to special structural features
- open fire, pyrotechnic effects or the use of a smoke machine that makes it necessary to switch off the fire alarm system
- Events for which the responsible fire brigade stipulates the deployment of a fire watch as a condition of the event licence
Various legal and official regulations apply in Germany for the deployment of fire guards and fire lookouts, which are applied depending on the area of deployment and risk situation. The Workplace Ordinance (ArbStättV), which obliges companies to ensure effective measures for preventive fire protection in companies, forms a central basis. In addition, the technical rules for workplaces, in particular ASR A2.2 „Measures against fires“, specify the organisational and personnel requirements for fire prevention.
For events, the regulations of the German Venue Ordinance (Versammlungsstättenverordnung - VStättVO) also apply. Among other things, this stipulates that suitable fire protection measures such as the use of fire guards must be provided in the event of an increased fire risk - for example due to large numbers of visitors, pyrotechnics or open flames. In addition, depending on the federal state and region, the responsible fire protection authorities or the fire service can impose individual requirements and make the deployment of fire marshals mandatory.
Employers are obliged to carry out a risk assessment and implement suitable protective measures, particularly for work involving a fire hazard. In many cases, insurance companies also require the deployment of qualified fire guards. Consistent compliance with these regulations serves to protect human life and property and at the same time protects companies from legal consequences, fines and possible liability and compensation claims.
