Guarding

The tasks of a security service is broadly diversified. It also includes contracts for guarding people, buildings or objects. Both Object protection, Site security as well as the Construction site security are included. The term "guarding" refers to a commercial activity that involves the protection of property or the safety of others.

To ensure on-site security, a security service carries out regular patrols. Alternatively, a team of security guards is present on site day and night in a security office. This is the case for buildings requiring special protection or Bundeswehr properties.

What do guarding systems require?

Every guarding task involves an "active custodial activity". This can mean the temporary supervision of certain areas. However, it also describes guarding tasks that are performed by means of recurring checks.
For example, a company premises may be secured with video cameras, fences and locking systems. Nevertheless, a security service is commissioned to carry out a tour every two hours. Guard dogs can be used as escorts. This would fulfil the "active custodial activity" requirement. This would not be the case with exclusively technical surveillance.
In addition to valuable works of art in a museum exhibition, cash transports, department stores' departments, entrances to music festivals, car parks, cloakroom areas in the opera or other areas can also be guarded. The recognisable presence of guards and security staff ensures safety and order.

Possible guarding objects

As the content of security assignments varies, different names have become established for special security assignments. When it comes to buildings in need of security or valuable objects, the term "property protection guarding" is used.

When it comes to guarding a border, a military property or a public building site, we speak of territorial protection. Territories can be monitored by patrols or vehicle access. Additional security measures such as cameras, fences, motion detectors or sirens make unauthorised entry more difficult. If people are involved in a security assignment, it can be a personal protection task or event protection.

In this case, all entrances, the box office areas, the stage and the stage pit, the areas behind the stage including the changing area, the escape routes and the car parks must be guarded. This requires a large number of staff to carry out access, passage and security checks. Certain areas must be designated as restricted zones or security areas. Only certain people have access to these areas.

Additions to guarding

In many cases, surveillance alone is not enough to guarantee long-term security. Additional security measures are therefore often installed. These can be structural security measures such as barriers, security fences, walls, barred windows or security doors. This is the case, for example, on company premises, ministries, prisons and military installations.

Technical monitoring options such as motion detectors, light barriers, cameras or alarm systems supplement the regular patrols by security staff. Organisational monitoring includes the installation of locking systems and/or individual personal identification, for example by a porter.

Guardrooms or watchtowers can be set up in order to better monitor areas. It is no coincidence that we refer to rescue services as rescue stations and police stations as police stations. The potential danger situation determines whether doormen, night watchmen or wardens are sufficient. In many cases, surveillance is carried out by a team of security staff.

The presence of guards must be guaranteed at all times, day and night as well as at weekends and on public holidays. Carefully drawn up guard schedules ensure seamless surveillance. However, they must also ensure that the employees involved are relieved in good time. Vigilance and fatigue do not go together. Boredom, distractions and routine quickly lead to inattention.

Special security orders

Some guards are provided by the police, customs guards, border guards or similar institutions. Special anchor guards are common on anchored ships. Their task is to guard the shipping lanes and their own ship. The anchor must not be allowed to leave the ground unnoticed, nor must a fire in the engine room endanger the ship's crew.

Prominent areas such as Buckingham Palace or the Vatican have their own palace guards. The fire brigade provides Fire item to prevent the fire from flaring up again. If arson is suspected, the fire watch secures the area in order to preserve important evidence for forensic purposes.
